Corporate Anniversaries: Mulkern Landscaping

“You could say we’re artists,” says Susan Mulkern about her family’s business. “We paint with plants.”
For 40 years the creative minds at Mulkern Landscaping & Nursery have focused on creating beautiful outdoor spaces for their residential and commercial clients. The company’s signature services include landscape design, high quality maintenance, gorgeous water features and professional landscape consulting.
Mulkern Landscaping is owned and operated by two generations of die-hard landscapers: Kevin and Susan Mulkern and their daughter, Dorothy. Guided by unflinching service standards, the family attributes their 40 years of success to their commitment to education.
“All of us try to get to as many workshops as possible,” says Dorothy Mulkern. “We’re always reading about our industry, business, agriculture—everything is connected.” Dorothy spent her summer attending UC, Berkeley’s [IN]LAND program, an extended immersion series on landscape architecture, and recently graduated from the University of Hawaii’s Master Gardener Program.
This emphasis on education extends to their customers as well. Every month, the Mulkerns hold free workshops for the public at their Nursery in Waimanalo. Topics range from composting to do-it-yourself landscape design. “People love being able to ask us questions,” says Susan. “We encourage them to bring in photos, measurements or even pieces of plants they have concerns about.” Often attendees decide to schedule a consultation—a landscape assessment of their property that includes in-depth recommendations. “Many of our clients approach me and say ‘I just want my grass to be green and my flowers to bloom,’” says Kevin. “A lot of clients think they need a new landscape, but really all they need to do is restore what they have.”
Many Mulkern Landscaping customers have been with the company for 20 years or more. Some customers continue on with weekly maintenance after their initial installations, others call in for repairs, and the Mulkerns are honored by their customers’ loyalty. “We think that’s the highest compliment,” says Dorothy. “That our customers keep coming back, and they refer us to their friends and family.”
Although Kevin jokes that customers stay for his sense of humor, he acknowledges he could not provide this quality service without his professional, hard-working team.
